Roots tells the story of Kunta Kinte, a young man captured in Africa and taken to America to be a slave. The series covers several generations, showing the impact of slavery not just on Kunta but also the continuing impact on his family in a heartfelt and engrossing manner. I first watched Roots in History class at school, and later got the whole collection to watch at home with my family. My parents remembered watching the original series when it was broadcast in the 1970’s but I was just as captivated watching it in 2010. I can’t state enough how great this show is, just like The Wire and Band of Brothers this is absolutely essential viewing that far transcends the traditional ambit of the TV series to produce something truly special and sincere. Buy it!!
