I remember watching this series growing up and thoroughly enjoying it even as a young boy being forced to watch it by his sisters. The bbc adaptation of pride and prejudice is excellent with beautiful cinematography of the English country side. The relative in-expensive cost of the series just makes purchasing it even sweeter!
This is excellent viewing if your idea of a dreamy evening's viewing is seeing a spoilt and frankly bit plain girl get stonking rich. Ladies love it, like guys like James Bond.
The 1996 adapation of Price and Prejudice is surely the best done. Colin Firth is Mr Darcy, a role that has made his career, and Jennifer Ehle is the strong, pretty (but not beautiful) Jane Bennett. This production sparked a revival of the period drama, and led to at least two movies (P&P with Keira Knighley, and the dreadfully inaccurate Becoming Jane with Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy). This adaption takes the characters out of the ballroom and into the country, emphasising both their intellectual and their physical. The first three episodes follows the interaction of the characters as the meet and follow a normal linear narrative. The next three episodes cope with the far more difficult problem of a dispersed set of characters communicating by letter, yet it still draws the viewer in coherently until all loose ends are tied together and the three main couples come together in their separate styles of marriage, one emphasing sex, one friendship and the final both. This 2 disc set contains all six episodes, plus two features. The first is an interview with the scriptwriter Andrew Davies, and others involved in the production. This is excellent viewing for those who have just enjoyed the production. The second feature explains the technical restoration that was done from the negatives of the Super 16 film which has delivered the best quality viewing. It is a little grainy in places, but given the limitations of Super 16, the colour and detail that comes through is excellent and as complete as possible. If you are grappling with the presentation and whether it is good enough for Bluray, this should settle things for you.
This is a MUST-SEE for any gender and age group. It's a wonderfully acted and totally rivetting drama with humour thrown in for exciting viewing. It's a firm favourite in our home.
