Michael Haneken's drama Caché a.k.a Hidden is an intimate story with an important message. Georges Laurent (Daniel Auteuil) and his wife Anne (Juliette Binoche) receive a mysterious package. The package consists of a video tape which makes them both initially surprised, but eventually that feeling is replaced with shock. The tape shows how the Laurent family leaves in the morning to work and return home for the evening.Everything is filmed right outside their apartment. Georges reports the incident to the police, only to discover that there is nothing they can do. No crime has occurred. Mysterious videotapes, however, continue to appear and they seem to include more and more Georges childhood issues. George finally realizes that the whole life of his family is collapsing on his neck. Cache is a mystery. Where Guillaume Canet's 'le dis à personne' provides the viewer little clues as the story unfolds, cache does the same, but leaves the viewer to decide finally what is at stake. It is precisely the uncertainty that makes the film as good as it is. The absolute strength of the film is its ability to handle relationships, manipulation, and paranoia. It is the story of how the fear of the unknown can make a sensible person turn into an animal. Daniel Auteil is brilliant and the Blu-ray transfer is reference quality. One can not recommend this film enough. Buy it!
The pace may be slow, but I guarantee you'll be on the edge of your seat! An almost great film, perhaps let down by the slightly preachy moral theme that emerges as the film unfolds.
