Brian De Palma's inspired rock'n'roll fusion of Faust, The Phantom of the Opera and The Picture of Dorian Gray boasts an Oscar-nominated score by Paul Williams, who also stars as an evil record producer who not only steals the work of composer/performer Winslow Leach (William Finley) but gets him locked up in Sing Sing - and that's not the worst that happens to him along the way.
Few revenge scenarios have ever been so amply justified, but the film is also constantly aware of the satirical possibilities offered by the 1970s music industry, exemplified by Gerrit Graham's hilariously camp glam-rock star. Jessica Harper (Suspiria) appears in her first major role as the naïve but ambitious singer, on whom Winslow secretly dotes.
Prodigiously inventive both musically and visually, this is one of De Palma's most entertaining romps, not least because it was so clearly a labour of love.

Beautiful steelbook of a great film and great service from zavvi.
Zavvi has the best prices on movies and steelbooks
A stunning steelbook edition of the classic cult film Phantom of the Paradise, a rock opera that predates The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This edition of Phantom also includes an interesting booklet which talks about the film's promotion and reception.
I have always loved this movie and was excited when I realized it was available in steelbook packaging. The movie transfer is immaculate!!! They obviously had someone who loved this film do the work on transferring to digital. Well done. The booklet inside is just an added bonus to the sensational work done on the steelbook itself!! Living in the states, I had no way to watch this as it's region B, but the wifey stepped up and got me an all region blu ray player for Christmas so it is on!!! Love having this stellar steel in my collection. Don't put it off. Get it today!!!
A great "rock opera" Fantastic Brian De Palma, taken from the Faust myth. Soundtrack anthology of "eternal youth". Beautiful Steelbook. Zavvi good products and service.
Have always loved this movie so was really excited to be able to finally get it on Blu Ray and was certainly not disappointed! The packaging and booklet is excellent with the picture quality of the movie itself crisp and clear and the sound quality perfect to be cranked up to 11. Completely blows the Dvd I have away. The host of extras including the new interviews with cast members are a must watch too. Really can't praise this highly enough! If you like this movie then this is the edition to buy, if you haven't seen it but love musicals then buy it, I am sure you will not be disappointed :-) "I'm your nightmares coming true, I am your crime!"
Fantastic steel book - really pleased with it - blu ray quality really good. Always nice when they have a different cover to the general blurry cover. Buy now before it goes
So I am not going to lie to you, but I haven't watched the disc yet. I have an older Bluray of this so I am a bit hesitant to crack open this beautiful steelbook, still preserved in its plastic seal. The reviews for the picture quality on this disc in particular are of high praise so if you like Phantom, getting this steelbook is a no brainer. The extras appear to be abundant and of great quality also, so that is another plus. Arrow even color corrected the film clips in the accompanying documentary that was ported from the French Blu that I already own also. So there are too many reasons to get this. Yet, I cannot get past how beautiful the steelbook is. The graphic design on it is as advertised, but in person, the ink is is more of a metallic variety. Way better in person than the rendering you see listed on the web. It looks really slick and a part of me will die when I eventually tear off the outer seal. Baby steps...
