The Lethal Protector
Created by David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane, Venom is a character who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988), the concept of the alien symbiote having been introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #252 (1982). The symbiote originally bonded with Peter Parker; however, when the Wall Crawler separated himself from the black suit, it found a new host: Eddie Brock.
A journalist who was wronged by Spider-Man, Brock used his newfound powers — which include strength, speed, agility, and the ability to shoot web-like substances from his body — to battle his foe. Nevertheless, he isn’t a full-fledged villain, having decided to operate as an anti-hero (often called the Lethal Protector).
Although Brock is synonymous with the persona, there have been various other hosts, the most famous of whom is Flash Thompson (also known as Agent Venom). A former bully of Peter Parker, Flash idolised Spider-Man during his younger years. After he graduated, he joined the military, where he lost his legs. Fortunately, his appendages were later restored upon accepting an offer to bond with the symbiote so as to carry out missions on behalf of the government.
Outside of the comic books, the Lethal Protector has appeared in multiple live-action movies, the first of them being Spider-Man 3 (in which he was portrayed by actor Topher Grace). Tom Hardy later took on the role in a series of solo releases. These films also saw the introduction of his archenemy, Carnage (Woody Harrelson).
