The good Aliens game

Aliens: Infestation is a solid little game from the excellent WayForward Technologies, the makers of the Shantae games. It's a metroidvania-style side-scrolling game, with a heavier focus on shooting (and not platforming). The game has an old-school look, so don't expect spectacular graphics, but it does look very nice and appropriate for this style of game design. The sound design is especially great here. You'll hear all the noises you'd expect from anything Alien: the motion detector, the machine guns, the shrieks of the xenomorphs etc. One very unique aspect of this game, which I especially liked is the squad system. You'll be playing with one character at a time, but have three others in your roster. If you die, another takes over. You can refill your squad with soldiers you find along the way. If you lose your whole roster before you find someone, it's game over. You can reload a save, of course. This way there is a feeling from the Aliens movies, where no one is safe. I should note, that this review was written after the debacle that was Colonial Marines. I read about this game in a review of said CM, where the reviewer recommended this game instead of that one. He was right.

Aliens meets Metroidvania

Aliens inspired Metroid when it first came out on the NES, and now Way Forward goes full circle by making this tense Metroid-like game with a foreboding atmosphere. The sound design on the game is excellent from the echo of your own footsteps on the Sulaco to the eerie beeping of the motion tracker - everything is conducive to instilling a feeling of tension and fear. You play a squad of marines that can all die and once you run out of marines, it's game over, man - game over! Couple this with great sprite work and art direction, backtracking for card keys and weapons/tools to get through previously inaccessible areas and you've got a great game on your hands. With the recent disappointment that was Aliens Colonial Marines I couldn't recommend this game highly enough.
