The story of The Giver centres on Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a young man who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colourless, world of conformity and contentment. Yet as he begins to spend time with The Giver (Jeff Bridges), who is the sole keeper of all the community’s memories, Jonas quickly begins to discover the dark and deadly truths of his community’s secret past. With this newfound power of knowledge, he realises that the stakes are higher than imagined – a matter of life and death for himself and those he loves most. At extreme odds, Jonas knows that he must escape their world to protect them all – a challenge that no one has ever succeeded at before. The Giver, directed by Phillip Noyce and screenplay by Michael Mitnick and Robert B. Weide, is based on Lois Lowry’s beloved young adult novel of the same name, which was the winner of the 1994 Newbery Medal and has sold over 12 million copies worldwide.

The Giver_ better than the book!?

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

I was so impressed with this movie, I went on to read the FOUR book dystopian adventure of which, this is the first book. I think this movie is much better than the book....the only downside being, that so much of significance happens in the last 10/15 minutes of the film - that it is hard to process / reflect properly on it all. Hence, the advantage of having it on DVD or Blu Ray to savour it properly. There are some spiritual truths beautifully captured in this story. It predates the current dystopian flood of movies like "The Hunger Games" and the "Divergent" series, by about 20 years - so do not compare it to those. It is NOT as high-tech and adrenaline-fuelled - but for those who sense/know there is so much more to Life than surface living....this is a sweet treat. Great "Zavvi" service as ever.
