Mario Bava's "Blood and Black Lace" is widely considered the film which paved the way for masterpieces like "The Bird with the crystal Plumage" or "Deep Red", and rightfully so. This Arrow release of the title offers not only the movie in the best possible video quality, but also provides a chockful of bonus materials - ranging from eye-opening interviews with famous directors like Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava, Bruno Forzani & Helene Cattet (the directors of "Amer" and "The strange colour of your body's tears") and many more to a brand new German/English produced giallo short feature not available otherwise, as far as I know. The best extra on this disc, however, is the visual essay "Gender and Giallo" by Michael Mackenzie which offers a thorough analysis of this genre by using excerpts of various famous and lesser known gialli alike. As a long-standing giallo fan, I have to recommend this blu-ray to every fellow fan and to anyone who wants to know more about this fascinating Italian movie genre. 5 of 5 stars
Been a film from the 60's can be off-putting for some. But even I was stunned by the incredible pacing and dark elements of Mario Bavas film. The pacing, along with the stunning visuals make this not only one of the most wonderful blu-ray renditions I've seen. But also a massive experience into the darkness that is Giallo. The last moments of Blood and Black Lace may not be the greatest, but it is still an incredible experience. If you do enjoy Giallo as a genre, you will fall in love with this film.
