Heroes And Villains
A fictional world that spawned from the pages of comic books in 1939, the Marvel Universe is home to some of the most popular superheroes that have ever been created: Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Wolverine, Daredevil, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, the Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, Ant-Man, the Wasp, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Blade, the Punisher, Deadpool, the Guardians Of The Galaxy, and many more. Each of these characters has featured in hundreds (even thousands) of stories, and this has allowed them to build large fanbases.
To challenge these superpowered beings — who range from god-like Asgardians to genetically gifted mutants — villains have arisen. Some of the most infamous names amongst them are Thanos, Galactus, Doctor Doom, Magneto, the Green Goblin, Loki, Ultron, Kang The Conqueror, and Kingpin.
The Origins Of The MCU
In 2008, the first movie in the industry-changing MCU made its debut in cinemas: Iron Man. Starring actor Robert Downey Jr. in the eponymous role, the plot focuses on a billionaire arms dealer called Tony Stark, who embarks on the hero’s journey after being near-fatally wounded and subsequently kidnapped by the terrorist organisation the Ten Rings. His heart powered by a prototype arc reactor, he forges a powerful suit of iron to escape his captives, and upon returning home, he finds that his worldview has been altered. Tony creates the next generation of armour, coloured red and gold, and sets out to rid the world of the weapons he distributed. However, his mission does not go without opposition, for there are those with the resources to combat his advanced technology.
Although Iron Man was the first hero in the MCU, he wasn’t the last. Throughout the years, there have been dozens of sequels and fresh-faced instalments, bringing recognisable characters to the big screen: The Incredible Hulk (2008), Thor (2011), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Avengers Assemble (2012), Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014), Ant-Man (2015), Doctor Strange (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Black Panther (2018), Captain Marvel (2019), Black Widow (2021), Shang Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings (2021), Eternals (2021), and others. The launch of Disney+, a streaming platform, has also provided a place where smaller-scale stories can be told, some examples being WandaVision (2021), The Falcon And The Winter Soldier (2021), and Moon Knight (2022).
