Dare you say his name five times? From the chilling imagination of horror master Clive Barker (Hellraiser, Nightbreed), comes Candyman - one of the greatest horror movies of the '90s, now newly restored on Blu-ray from Arrow Video

When grad student Helen Lyne (Virginia Madsen) begins working on a thesis about urban legends, she comes across the terrifying tale of the Candyman - a vengeful, hook-handed spirit who can be summoned by saying his name five times in the mirror. As her research leads her into the bowels of Chicago's deprived housing projects and deeper into the Candyman's world, Helen learns that some legends are best left well alone.

Expertly directed by British filmmaker Bernard Rose (Paperhouse) and boasting an astounding score by composer Philip Glass, Candyman ingeniously reworks Clive Barker's original short story "The Forbidden" (originally published as part of his groundbreaking Books of Blood series) into a modern horror parable that remains as timely today as ever.

Candman

As for the Arrow release, as always, it's fantastic, subtitles (perfect as I'm hard of hearing),and the extras that come with. Above this the quality is brilliant. For the film, it's my personal favourite Clive Barker horror.

This dark and unnerving horror outing based on a story by Clive Barker and directed by Bernard Rose has quite rightly earned a reputation as one of the best horror films of the 90's. The story takes the ideas of harmless urban legends and gives them an evil and physical form. While some people have slated ‘Candyman' for ignoring its own rules I don't think it did. ‘Candyman' is not a straight forward horror film; there is an intricate plot which requires thought to be fully understood. Bernard Rose does a great job of creating an unnerving and dark atmosphere which is complimented perfectly by the haunting music. The film has an almost religious feel to it without actually being a religious-based movie and an abundant sense of dread is created through some inventive and impressive direction. Virginia Madsen's performance should be acknowledged as well as she plays her role very well, even generating feelings of sympathy for her character. The film is a good length and goes at a well-judged pace. The performances are impressive too, Tony Todd is absolutely terrifying down from his posture to his voice. In fact, for me the only real downside was the ending, it was a sort of "it's not over" ending, and for me it felt tacky. In conclusion, an atmospheric horror film that delivers on pretty much every level. Candyman is a slasher film that offers up something different and, dare I say it, has some class. It's a very well executed horror film that also has other things to say as well. My rating 8 out of 10.
