XCOM

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

The new XCOM Enemy Unknown is a real blast form the past. If you enjoyed the original UFO, you are going to feel right at home. Good graphics and addictive strategy based game-play make for a thrilling experience. Fan of the old one or not, you have to pick up this title.

A great Game on its own!

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

I loved the original so I had to pre-order, and thanks to zavvi i could get it for a great price and it even was delivered really fast. Anyhow, i played around 50 hours now and finished the game. I had so much fun playing it, seeing this new interpretation from firaxis games and 2K games running on Unreal Engine this game is a blast and blew me away! Yes, i complained myself for missing things from the original, but hey, thinking about it, if it was just 100% the same people would complain too, as it would be nothing but a clone with better graphics. Firaxis announced more content to come, so I hope there will be some cool releases in the near future and maybe even a sequel XCOM EU 2 ? Additionally, there is mod support, so who knows what the community will be coming up with.

Awesome!

Almost perfect game with only two problems, the aliens look like they are not moving till you find them and in classic mode aliens shooting nonstop critical and never misses. The feeling of the game is perfect version of the old game in 2012, worth buying and waiting for patches!

xcom is back

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

XCOM Enemy Unknown is a remake of one of my favourite games from the early '90s. Fans of the old one will notice that it has quite a few changes, some good, some not so good. I don't want to say more about all of the other changes as it might spoil your discovery of them. There's also an option to play online against other people if you're into that which will give it a better shelf life.

This game is a remake of an earlier game of the same name; I loved the original and this one is better all round. Really enjoying it so far!

Pretty Darn Good

4 stars out of a maximum of 5

Fans of the original will not be disappointed by this remake. The same enjoyable balance of the strategic and the tactical. The same technological development needed to keep you up with the increasing difficulty as the game progresses. The same way you get oddly attached to your cannon fodder soldiers. As soon as those few remaining, but not really game breaking, bugs are patched this will stand as classic.

A brilliant update that stays true to the original.

I still remember the first time I played UFO: Enemy Unknown (back before they put X-COM in the title), since it was one of the first PC games I ever bought. The vast scale of the alien menace meant that you had to struggle to respond to threats across the world with your meagre resources. The unfair balance of power, with the aliens wielding far greater firepower and armour than your poor soldiers. The feeling of loss as the handful of veterans that you have managed to train up eventually get killed. All of this is still true in X-COM and I admire how they kept true to the spirit of the game, whilst updating all of the issues with the dynamics and interface that make 90s games so hard to play. I especially like the inclusion of an Ironman mode - although it is not for the feint-hearted as even on the lowest difficulty your memorial will quickly fill up with the names of soldiers you have lost. I am still playing my first game, and although I have lost a huge number of soldiers, it still doesn't feel impossible to win, but it is pretty tricky. The combat is still turn based, but is much faster paced than the original due to the smaller squad sizes and more streamlined action systems. Most of the old villains are back, but are redesigned to look even more menacing (and the chrysalids are still terrifying). A lot of the micromanagement from the base design was stripped out, since you only have to manage one base, and don't need to worry about defensibility any more (although I do miss being able to defend the base you built against alien assault like in the previous games). But I am in the minutiae, as a whole the game is great. The aliens are formidable, but not insurmountable. Despite having no scripting or background you can grow very attached to your squad members (at least until they die). And above all, it is so engrossing I struggle to pull myself away from the game - like many a Firaxis game I am just thinking one more turn, just one more turn).

Could be better

3 stars out of a maximum of 5

I guess I just love the old version better, the game has its good points however they seem to have taken away quite a few of the things I loved. To be fair they did say it was a new game and not just a revamp so you get what you are given. That being said, if the first Xcom was organized like this I don't think I would have played it all the way to the end.
