Be Warned... It's Alive!
Kenneth Branagh leads an all-star cast including Robert De Niro, Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Hulce, Ian Holm, John Cleese and Aidan Quinn in his definitive cinematic version of Mary Shelley's classic tale of gothic terror.
At the turn of the 19th century, visionary scientist Victor Frankenstein (Kenneth Branagh) embarks on an obsessive quest to conquer the mysteries of human mortality. But his hubristic bid to create life out of death goes hideously wrong, and succeeds only in begetting a deformed monster (Robert De Niro).
Horrified by what he has wrought, the scientist attempts to destroy his creation, but fails. Rejected by his creator and shunned by the world of man, the tormented creature swears vengeance against Frankenstein and his family. As the monster begins to enact his murderous revenge, Victor must face a terrible reckoning with the tragic consequences of attempting to play God.
Mary Shelley's seminal novel is one of the most adapted books of all time, and this retelling faithfully goes back to the original source, lushly transforming the story's twin themes of love and death into a darkly operatic gothic romance.
Unlike many versions of Shelley's novel, Branagh's adaptation understands that Frankenstein's misbegotten creation is as pitiable as he is monstrous, and never loses sight of the human tragedy lying at the core of its horrific tale. Filled with sweeping, atmospheric visuals and powerfully emotional performances from an award-winning ensemble of acting talent, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein stands as a landmark interpretation of this enduring masterpiece.

Can’t complain
I purchased this film at a greatly reduced price having not seen it since it came out. To my surprise, it is a decent transfer and the film is actually better than I remember. Can’t really fault it especially at the price I paid.

Great edition
Curious to rewatch this as I haven't seen it since it came out at the cinema. I remember loving it, however I was kid at the time. This edition looks great - this steelbook is a killer one.

It's Alive!
I was so happy to see this at a great price here on Zavvi! Being a fan of the novel & previous Hollywood interpretations, Kenneth Branagh's take on the classic horror tragedy is very overlooked & full of creative highlights. The pace can be a little manic at times, the 1st act could have done with an extra breath or two, but there were rumours of major interference by producer Francis Ford Coppola which may explain some sudden cuts. The cast is superb - Helena Bonham Carter deserved her stardom which followed - while John Cleese's cameo is very effective seeing him cast agonist type. DeNiro's charisma shines through the amazing make-up, Branagh nails his character's reckless ambition & Patrick Doyle's music score is truly sumptuous. The 4K update does the visuals & sound proud to enhance it's gothic, rich atmosphere & the steelbook design of the original. more effective poster design is most welcome. I knew Branagh would do a great job with 'Thor' for Marvel, back in 2011, based on my memories of this movie & it deserves more appreciation through this stunning restoration for home viewing. An underrated gem.

Nice release!
Of course, as one would expect from an Arrow 4K title, this is the very best that the film has ever looked. The picture is detailed, if a bit grainy, but the colours are fantastic and the dts-HD soundtrack is also very good, which is hardly surprising. The steelbook itself is also very nice, the artwork is solid, if a tad uninspiring but it more than does the job. Overall, it's a superb purchase and a genuine must buy for fans of Branagh's film!

Very nice steelbook and transfer
This is a great movie, and this new transfer looks really good, and it is packed with a lot of extras, including the booklet. The steelbook looks much better than in the images, and I appreciate the new cover made for this release.

Reverse cover
I actually prefer the image on the back, it looks better. Just like Smokey and the Bandit. It's not too late to change it.
