Burton's Horror Homage
Frankenweenie is a remake of a 30 minute short originally filmed by Tim Burton and now remade using Claymation. The story is simple a boy loves his dog and an untimely incident sees the loss of man's best friend, but with our main characters name being Victor Frankenstein he sets about bringing his best friend back to life. Now whilst this may seem like a Frankenstein for kids parody (and yes it is) the highlights of the film is not simply the main story but that of Victors fellow classmates who discover Victors secret of bringing the dead back to life, they set about trying to top his experiment. Now those who are familiar with the old 1930's Universal studios horror classics starring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff will notice the references to these infamous horror giants very early on in some of the characteristics of Victors fellow students and a nod to the Bride of Frankenstein those who have seen this classic will know the reference when it happens. Whilst these references to the classics are there it is a simple story that blends light hearted fun for children with big references for those who know their history of horror films. This is a classic Tim Burton animation to have in your collection along side The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride.
