Jumping Joseph
An engaging and dramatic biopic. Although the story is episodic the depth of character keeps the film from falling into sketches of the highlights. The characters have attitude and individuality so the film avoids a 'sweetness & light' interpretation, and avoids wasting too much time on scenic camerawork . The viewer does get caught up in the emotional life of the painter, his family and associates while the mores and manners of the age naturally support the action. There are some big laughs and some deep sadness. The film breathes life into a well known painter, revealing his strength of drive as a human and an artist.

Classic Film
Whatever the awards season said, this matches and surpasses some of the honoured titles of last year. Strong acting, story and visual treat. Timothy Spall is excellent and supported by a strong cast
