The FA Cup is on its way back to Old Trafford after a five-year absence. In their first ever FA Cup Final appearance since this showpiece event moved to Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, it was a day of numbers as United triumphed for a record eleventh time in their sixteenth FA Cup Final; Millwall made their inaugural first Cup Final appearance and Alex Ferguson got his hands back on the trophy that had served him so well for the fifth time.
It took forty-four minutes for the deadlock to be broken, but it was well worth waiting for, as Christiano Ronaldo powered home a close range header past Marshall in Millwall's goal. The goal was well deserved, as the young Portuguese international had been a thorn in Millwall's right hand side for much of the first half, setting the FA Cup Final stage alight with a showcase of magical tricks.
United's second came as Ryan Giggs brought back memories of the 1999 Semi-Final wonder goal against Arsenal, but this time he was unable to unleash the killer shot before he was brought down by the desperate challenge of Livermore. Jeff Winter showed no hesitation in pointing to the spot, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy duly took advantage by dispatching with usual aplomb.
The flying Dutchman was on hand again to seal United's victory, when he steered home Ryan Giggs' low cross following a move of flowing football, and the season ended on a high as the trophy headed back to Old Trafford.
It was a glorious day as the sun shone brightly and United celebrated yet another success in their prestigious history.
