Gantz - Complete Collection
Gantz is an anime series, based on a best-selling manga series of the same name, and has spawned a couple of live action movies. The story starts when a pair of students, Kurono and Kato, are hit by a subway train. They eventually come to, with some others in a room, along with a black sphere, which turns out to be the eponymous Gantz. The device reveals to the party, that they are all dead and have been resurrected to do its bidding, or else they can go back to being dead. They are equipped with a super-suit, and assorted guns, and sent off to kill aliens that happen to be living nearby. At this point, things start to go pear-shaped - the designs of the aliens is ridiculous, to an unthinkable extreme. There's also no real attempt to explain Gantz itself, or where it came from, or why it does what it does. It's also extremely difficult to care for any of the generically irritating protagonists, and when they meet their inevitably messy doom, at the hands of the next, even sillier, yet deadlier monster, it doesn't seem significant. That said, you may wonder why it was popular. It's technically, well-executed, and nicely animated, whilst also containing some sex scenes and oodles of violence. If that's all you want, then it's great, but if you're looking for something deeper with a trace of subtlety, then it's not for you.
