Comic genius
Jacques Tati may not be on quite the same plinth as Chaplin and Keaton but if not his fingertips grip the ledge on which they stand and he is certainly in the same tradition, offering visual humour which is engaging, witty, charming, perceptive and definitely touched by genius. The five films here - Jour de fête (1949); Les Vacances de M. Hulot (1953); Mon Oncle (1958); Playtime (1967) and Parade (1974) - represent all the feature films directed by and starring Tati other than 1971’s Traffic. All are gems, not least because Tati has such an unwavering comic eye not only for individual foibles but also for the idiosyncracies and absurdities of modern society. Monsieur Hulot, the figure played by Tati in the central three films in this collection is undoubtedly one of the great comic creations, on a par with Clouseau, Fawlty or Brent. Those impatient with the comic pace of classic Laurel and Hardy should look elsewhere but those willing to give their time to Tati will find it richly rewarded.
