First transmitted on Channel 4 in 1990, Nightingales focuses on three security guards who have the unenviable task of working the graveyard night shift in a tower block, a situation which regularly turns to the surreal. A werewolf that performs open-heart surgery, bouts of Shakespearian verse and an undercover police operation are just some of the bizarre situations - and confrontations - the trio find themselves in.

As well as featuring an all-star cast, Nightingales was written by Paul Makin (Goodnight Sweetheart) and directed by the acclaimed Tony Dow (Only Fools and Horses, The Keith Barret Show). Nightingales! Brilliant! Surreal!
I watched the two original series when they were first broadcast and thought they were brilliant! Unfortunately I think I was probably 50% of the viewing audience - I know of nobody else who has ever even heard of this programme. Three magnificent actors, Robert Lindsay, James Ellis and (the unrecognizable) David Threlfall play off against each other in these weird, wonderful, clever, intelligent, surreal plots. The episodes pack in so much, bearing in mind that when you take out the intro and the credits the actual run time per episode is about twenty-three minutes (the advert break has been removed). I had recorded a number of the original programs on poor quality VHS so to see this DVD issued was wonderful. I really wish this series had caught on - I would have liked another ten series. Weirdly, on business, I used to visit the building in which the series was supposedly set and lived a few hundred yards away in a flat above New Street Station. Nightingales! Brilliant! Surreal!
