A visionary work from a visionary director

Everybody has heard of A Clockwork Orange, right? No? Not to worry, Zavvi’s got you covered.

Presenting one of the greatest feats in cinema history, A Clockwork Orange is a crime film set in a dystopian world, based on the seminal works of acclaimed author Anthony Burgess’ 1962 novel of the same name.

Providing a thought-provoking commentary on the state of social, political and economic issues, A Clockwork Orange isn’t your average run-of-the-mill popcorn flick. And that’s a good thing!

Not for the faint of heart, the film follows the despicable acts of Alex DeLarge as he takes part in a chain of violence and abuse. Sentenced to prison for his crimes, witness Alex’s reprogramming at the hands of a cruel experiment.

An interpretative title, A Clockwork Orange is generally accepted to refer to the mechanical vs the sweet - collective order vs personal freedom. And following the film’s events, you will uncover for yourself what this truly means.

Controversy

A Clockwork Orange is a film steeped in controversy, releasing in an era where the growing escalation of onscreen violence resulted in backlash from both political and citizen groups.

While receiving boundless critical praise, A Clockwork Orange suffered from accusations of unnecessary gratuitous violence. This resulted in Kubrick himself banning the film in the United Kingdom in 1973 in response to this backlash.

Thankfully, A Clockwork Orange has returned to our screens, with the first legitimate UK screening arriving in 2000. Now considered quite commonplace in the world of cinema, this once abhorrent level of violence has become far more mainstream. And now you have the opportunity to find out what all the controversy was about!
