It All Started In The ‘90s

Created by John R. Dilworth for Cartoon Network, Courage the Cowardly Dog first aired on November 12th 1999 as an American animated cartoon centred around horror comedy - the show ran for a total of 4 seasons.

Despite ending in 2002, the show still remains a fan favourite of the ‘90s due to its untoward and unique approach to the genre of cartoon creation. The show was even nominated for 3 Golden Reel awards and an Annie award during its time on air.

In every episode, the three main characters (Courage, Eustace, and Muriel) are launched into a frenzy of weird and often paranormal adventures that embody the dark and surreal sense of humour that made the show the hit it is today.

“Stupid Dog!”

Throughout its time on air, the show was home to an array of quirky characters; however, the three main cast remain the same, seeing Courage, Muriel, and Eustace appearing in nearly every single episode - they are the staple characters of the cartoon.

Courage the Cowardly Dog: A devoted and determined pink beagle who was rescued by Muriel Bagge after escaping from the veterinary clinic ‘Pets of Tomorrow’. Courage was stranded in an alley, where he watched his family being rocketed into space forever. Left crying and alone, Muriel took pity on the stray and adopted him, taking him to his new home in ‘the middle of nowhere’ in Kansas; she graciously named him ‘Courage’ and vowed to take care of him from that day forth.

Muriel Bagge: Described as both sweet and loving, Muriel is dedicated to caring for the two most important people in her life: Eustace and, of course, Courage. Depicted in the show as an elderly Scottish woman, Muriel is known to have a no-nonsense approach to caring for her loved ones, often seeing her use her weapon of choice, the rolling pin, to swiftly whip Eustace into shape when he gives Courage a difficult time. (Which is more often than not!)

Eustace Bagge: This character takes on your typical ‘old man’ persona with his cynical and grumpy outlook on the world and everything in it - apart from money, of course. Often referring to Courage as “Stupid Dog!” throughout the series, Eustace has a burning dislike for the family ‘pet’ and enjoys taunting, teasing, and messing with him from the comfort of his signature red chair, in between browsing his the ‘Nowhere newspaper’.
