What Is the Film Goodfellas About?

Joining director Martin Scorsese’s extensive filmography, Goodfellas is a crime movie that focuses on the exploits of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), whose story was first told on the pages of Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family, a non-fiction book by Nicholas Pileggi.

The narrative takes place over the course of multiple decades, showing how Henry transforms into a seasoned criminal after taking part in the activities of a Mafia group operating in his neighbourhood, Brooklyn. The caporegime (captain) of this illegal operation is Paulie Cicero (Paul Sorvino), who is associated with Jimmy ‘the Gent’ Conway (Robert De Niro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci).

As one would expect, Henry’s initial crimes are minor in the grand scheme of things, but this doesn’t last for long. He eventually becomes involved in the lifestyle’s more violent aspects, such as having to hide the body of the murdered Billy Batts (Frank Vincent), whose status as a made man means that his untimely death is considered a grievous violation of Mafia code.

If you’re familiar with the history of the Mafia in the United States, you’re probably aware that most members didn’t have a happy ending. Henry is no exception to the rule, as both he and his wife, Karen Friedman (Lorraine Bracco), suffered during and after the height of their involvement. The riches that Henry acquired through the selling of illegal narcotics were lost, and his ‘exciting’ way of life diminished into that of an ordinary citizen.
