An Iconic Nicktoon

Forming part of Nickelodeon’s original slate of animated TV series, known universally as ‘Nicktoons’, Ren and Stimpy carved a path for the many classic shows that would follow - setting the bar high, alongside such shows as Rugrats and Doug.

Released in 1991 and following the adventures of Ren (voice by John Kricfalusi and Billy West), an ill-tempered chihuahua, and Stimpy (also voiced by Billy West), a placid house cat with a heart of gold, Ren and Stimpy became infamous for its use of dark and adult humour. This led to the development of a loyal cult following for the series, long after it ended in 1995.

Renowned for its borderline content, Ren and Stimpy faced many setbacks in its classic run on TV, with some episodes, particularly the second series’ ‘Man’s Best Friend’ being cancelled for its excessive use of violence, tobacco, and production issues.

And the controversy doesn’t end there: Kricfalusi was even fired from the show due to late delivery of episodes, citing creative difference as a major influencing factor in his departure. Billy West would go on to replace him as voice actor for Ren following the second series.

Despite the relatively adult-focused humour, the series retained generally positive critical praise across the board and even warranted an adult spin-off series in 2003 titled Ren and Stimpy “Adult Party Cartoon”. This series brought back such episodes as ‘Man’s Best Friend’.

The Return Of Ren And Stimpy

Due to the wide appeal of Ren and Stimpy amongst older audiences, the series was revived in 2020 and set to produce further episodes following these fan-favourite characters.
