A Classic Fairy Tale

Sleeping Beauty (otherwise known as ‘Little Briar Rose’) is a classic fairy tale that finds its routes in the early 14th century, in the narrative Perceforest.

It was first published in a collection of tales by Giambattista Basile, known as The Pentamerone. However, it would later be adapted by Charles Perrault in Histoires ou contes du temps passé in 1697, subsequently collected by the Brothers Grimm.

The story follows the basic concept of a princess cursed to sleep for a hundred years by an evil fairy, only to be awakened by a handsome prince.

In popular culture, Sleeping Beauty is most known for its 1959 animated musical adaptation by Walt Disney. Directed by Les Clark, Eric Larson, and Wolfgang Reitherman, this was the 16th Disney animated feature film, preceding The Little Mermaid (1989).

The voice cast is made up of Mary Costa, Eleanor Audley, Verna Felton, Barbara Luddy, Barbara Jo Allen, Bill Shirley, Taylor Holmes, and Bill Thompson. Their talents were accompanied by a musical score put together by the Graunke Symphony Orchestra.

A Walt Disney Experience

In the 1959 movie, Princess Aurora is the eponymous ‘Sleeping Beauty’, cursed by the evil witch Maleficent to die by the prick of a spinning wheel before her sixteenth birthday. To protect her, the good fairy Merryweather lessens the curse so that she will only drift into a deep sleep.

Fearing Maleficent’s power, Merryweather and her two sisters (known collectively as the good fairies) take her in and raise her by the name of Briar Rose in a small cottage. The princess is unaware of her guardian’s magical nature, as they disguise themselves as simple peasants.

On the day she turns sixteen, Aurora goes out into the woods to gather berries. There she meets Prince Phillip, who she falls in love with. Unbeknownst to the two of them, they are both betrothed.

Later, Aurora is lured to a dark tower by Maleficent and pricks her finger on the cursed spinning wheel. Heartbroken, the fairies cast a spell that forces everyone in the kingdom into a deep sleep until the curse is broken.

Finding out about Philip’s true identity, the fairies find that he has already been abducted by Maleficent. They manage to rescue him, and he goes on to kill Maleficent in battle. Now free of the witch, Philip finds Aurora and breaks the spell with a simple kiss.

As with all classic fairy tales, they then go on to live happily ever after...
