The Purge presented a concept never explored previously, introducing film-goers to a vision of America where all crime – including murder – is legal for a 12-hour period. As a result of this annual event, the country is deemed prosperous and crime-free for the rest of the year.
Beginning in 2013, the first movie, simply titled ‘The Purge’, gave audiences their first glimpse into this terrifying world. Directed by James DeMonaco (the creator of the franchise), this film would receive multiple sequels, including The Purge: Anarchy, The Purge: Election Year, The First Purge, and The Forever Purge.
A twenty-episode TV series was also released in 2018.
