Welcome To The Land Of Light

Ultraman (also known as the Ultra Series) is a Japanese superhero franchise created by Tsuburaya Productions in 1966. First appearing as a television series, Ultraman centres around the eponymous character as he faces off against various Ultra Monsters. The show is recognised as one of the original entries in the daikaiju (‘giant monster’) and kyodai hīro (‘giant hero’) genres, joining alongside the likes of Daiei Film’s Gamera and Toho’s Godzilla.

In Japan, Ultraman is regarded similarly to Superman in the US, having become a prominent figure in Asian pop culture. He first shot to popularity with the release of the original series, which ran for a total of 39 episodes. The character is an Ultra Warrior (Urutora senshi) from the Land Of Light, a planet that resides in Nebula M78. Like all of his kind, Ultra man can be recognised by his glowing eyes, silver-and-red armour, and chest-embedded Colour Timer (a device that indicates the amount of energy an Ultra Warrior has left).

During the original series, Ultraman encounters SSSP Officer Shin Hayata while chasing a space monster known as Bemular. Hayata ultimately dies as a result of their interaction, so Ultraman decides to merge their bodies into one. Together, they protect Earth from all threats, both aliens and monsters.
