Possibly the best game of 2009
Batman: Arkham Asylum is a huge surprise not only because it succeeds as a comic book game, but also because it excels as a game period. It is a shining example of how excellent execution can overcome some shortcomings. The story centers around the famed Arkham Asylum, where chaos and terror start to spread as the Joker takes it over and releases the inmates to rampage throughout the facility. The story does not have many mind-bending twists or award-winning dialogue, but it does an outstanding job of capturing the comic book feel: the mix between silly and macabre. The characters are as over-the-top as they should be, the atmosphere is creepy. The game has a metroid-style structure where achieving story goals gives the player access to new abilities (in the form of Batman's gadgets) and new areas of Arkham island to explore. The introduction of new challenges, new enemies, gadgets and gameplay enhancements comes at a steady pace, thus making the game the opposite of boring. The gameplay itself can be divided into three main elements: combat, stealth and exploration. 1. Combat. This is where you as Batman take on groups of thugs in hand-to-hand combat. The game's freeform fighting system hits the golden mark of "easy to learn, but hard to master". This system allows the player to act and react swiftly to take down opponents in spectacular fashion. 2. Stealth. Stealth comes in when the foes Batman faces are armed. Here the player must navigate intricate environments and interact with them to distract and take down enemies whilst remaining unseen to reach his next objective. 3. Exploration. This is where Batman shows off his detective prowess to track down key people and the player can hunt down the many collectibles scattered around the game. These collectibles deserve a special mention, because not only do they lend interesting insight into what is happening and the numerous characters of Batman lore, but the activity itself is a story on it's own (play the game- you'll see what I mean). By dividing it's gameplay into three distinctly separate elements the developers had the chance to polish each one. And it shows. Each element gives you the incredible sense of empowerment that only Batman can feel: wether it's taking down hulks with pipes with swift martial arts or making armed guys wet their pants as they notice that half their buddies are either missing or hanging upside-down from the sealing, or using Batman's intelligence and technology to solve complex riddles. Outside the main story there are challenges that focus on the stealth and combat aspects. These challenges demand much of the player, but the sense of accomplishment that they offer (plus the unlockable costume and in-game figurines) makes the player feel like a champion. The game's presentation is top notch. Crisp textures, detailed models and impressive lighting are just a part of the visual package- the game manages to look both creepy and colorful at the same time. The characters look as they should (the Joker's insane smile) and the animations are outstanding (especially the combat takedowns). While the music just keeps the atmosphere intact and is nothing spectacular, the voice acting is great: if you are familiar with the legendary Batman animated series, your nostalgia needs will be fulfilled as Mark Hamil reprises his role as the utterly insane Joker, Kevin Conroy as the stoic Batman and Arleen Sorkin as the playful-but-deadly Harley Quinn. All in all Batman Arkham Asylum is a game that obviously had huge amounts of attention given to every little detail. Even if you're not a Batman fan, you owe it to yourself to play this highly-polished and fun game. And if you are a Batman fan, this game is your dream made real.
