The New Console Generation
Releasing in late 2020, the PlayStation 5 (PS5) was to follow up Sony Interactive Entertainment’s successful PS4. It joined alongside Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Series S, starting the new ninth generation of video game consoles.
With an emphasis on digital gaming, the PS5 was launched with two contrasting versions: a standard model with a 4K Blu-ray optical disc drive and a Digital Edition with no disc drive. The latter variant was made as a cheaper model for gamers who prefer digital download over purchasing physical copies of games.
Boasting improved hardware, including an AMD GPU capable of 4K resolution at 120 frames per second, the PS5 is a big step up from its predecessor. Not only that, but the console allows backward compatibility for most PS4 and PSVR games (something highly requested by fans).
DualSense
As well as improved console hardware, the PS5 also includes a brand-new controller: the DualSense. This innovative piece of technology features a sleek white-and-black design and follows in the footsteps the well-regarded DualShock controller, implementing further modifications based on player feedback.
The DualSense retains the same standard button layout of the PS4 controller; however, the ‘Share’ button is now ‘Create’. There are also various new features, including adaptive triggers that provide haptic feedback that responds to the needs of each game - such as the drawing of a bow - and an in-built speaker that removes the need for an external microphone.
Games
As with the PS4 before it, the PS5 includes a massive library of video games, including a whole selection of console exclusives.
Some of the earliest games to make the jump to next-gen were Rachet & Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West, Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Hitman 3, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - among others.
