Classic Games

The golden age of arcade video games is generally defined as a period from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. During this time, arcade machines were a dime a dozen and attracted a slew of gamers to head on down to their local amusement arcades and part with their coins.

Following the release of Taito’s Space Invaders in 1978, the arcade phenomenon kicked into high gear. This introduced many of the staple features that would become prominent in the industry, including tracking high scores. Games such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong followed in the path of Space Invaders, becoming blockbuster titles and huge parts of popular culture.

At the time, the field was dominated by a select group of developers, who created many critically praised arcade games: Namco, Atari, Williams Electronics, Stern Electronics, and Nintendo.

Despite suffering a decline in later years, the arcade industry bounced back in the early ‘90s to mid-2000s, releasing hits such as Dance Dance Revolution and Mortal Kombat. Notably, the advent of Capcom’s Street Fighter II paved the way for modern fighting games, including the aforementioned Mortal Kombat, Fatal Fury, Killer Instinct, and Tekken.
