The World Of Japanese Animation

Finding its roots in Japan, anime has since gone on to become immensely popular in Western culture. With its mass-market appeal, this style of animation has attracted audiences of kids, teens, and adults.

Most fans will be familiar with the biggest franchises: Attack On Titan, Demon Slayer, Hunter X Hunter, My Hero Academia, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Monster, Cowboy Bebop, and One Piece — to name just a few.

The earliest examples of Japanese animation can be found at the beginning of the 20th century. At this time, anime was distributed in theatrical form only, either as feature-length movies or short films. Despite being successful domestically, this style of animation didn’t go global until the 1960s, spurred on by the work of Osamu Tezuka, Hayao Miyazaki, and Satoshi Kon.

Otogi Manga Calendar (1961) was the first televised series to adopt this artistic approach. However, it was Astro Boy (1963) that helped anime break into the global mainstream. Directed by Osamu Tezuka, the film adapted the manga source material of the same name.
