Race Across America started as the greatest endurance challenge of the Century - a 100 mile run through Death Valley, cycling the 2,500 miles of Route 66, row 250 miles across Lake Erie and a swim 15 miles down the Hudson River - and ended with James Cracknell almost losing his life.
After competing in the Marathon des Sables, James intended to take on a truly unique endeavour: an attempt to race across the entire breadth of North America, from Los Angeles to New York City - running, cycling, rowing and swimming - in only sixteen days to set a new endurance World Record.
But what started as an attempt to become the ultimate endurance athlete, fighting against his body, pushing it to the limit, became a very different adventure for double gold-medal winning Olympian James Cracknell.
