Psycho Merchandise

Discover director Alfred Hitchcock’s seminal work with Zavvi UK’s wide range of Psycho merchandise, including its contemporary prequel ‘Bates Motel’.

Every horror/thriller fan deserves to experience the classic that set the bar for a whole genre, regarded by many as the first true ‘slasher’ film.

The Master Of Suspense

Psycho was released in 1960, adapting the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert Bloch.

The plot follows real-estate secretary Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) after she steals money from her boss to pay of the debts accrued by her boyfriend, Sam Loomis (John Gavin).

While driving towards Sam’s home in Fairvale, California, Marion attracts the attention of a highway patrol officer as a result of her suspicious behaviour. He tails her all the way to the Bates Motel.

Upon Marion’s arrival, she meets the hotel proprietor, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), who invites her over for dinner. This is shortly followed by a row between what appears to be Norman and his mother. During the dinner, Norman explains that his mother is possessive and forbids him from having a life outside of her.

Having decided to return the money the following morning, Marion takes a shower. It is in this shower where she is murdered by a shadowy figure – one of the most iconic moments in film.

The rest of the film depicts Milton Arbogast (Martin Balsam), Sam, and Marion’s sister (Lila, played by Vera Miles) investigating the circumstances around her sudden disappearance.

The Bates Motel

In 2013, a prequel to the film titled ‘Bates Motel’ was released. This followed Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), taking place in a more modern setting.

The show ran for a total of five seasons, with the final season loosely adapting the events of Psycho.
