Resident Evil is a Japanese horror franchise created by Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara that first appeared in 1996. It includes a series of horror survival games, live-action and animated films, comic books, and graphic novels.

The live-action films include; Resident Evil (2002), Apocalypse (2004), Extinction (2007), Afterlife (2010), Retribution (2012) and The Final Chapter (2017). The films were all directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.

The storyline of the games primarily focuses on a group who must battle against the Umbrella Corporation, who developed the T-virus which transforms humans into zombies and transform other creatures into horrifying monsters.

The films follow the general storyline of the games, where Alice (Milla Jovovich) and Rain Ocampo (Michelle Rodriguez) must lead the commando team and break into "the Hive”. The Hive is a vast underground genetics lab owned by the all-powerful Umbrella Corporation. The corporation have released a deadly virus, that killed lab's personnel and resurrected them as evil zombies. Alice, Rain and their team have only three hours to shut down the lab and destroy the supercomputer before the virus overruns the Earth.

This epic franchise is one of the most successful film franchises based on a Video Game in history. The franchise is also one of the highest-grossing film series, having grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide. Not only has it been successful monetarily, but also it has accumulated millions of fans around the world.
