Released in 2001 by Dreamworks, the first Shrek film stars Mike Myers in the title role with a supporting cast that includes Eddie Murphy as Donkey and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona.

The plot centres around a highly territorial and mean-spirited ogre called Shrek and his newly found friend Donkey as they journey to rescue Princess Fiona so that she can marry Lord Farquaad Of Duloc, a wicked man who despises all fairytale creatures. To recover the princess, the unlikely duo first needs to infiltrate a locked caste guarded by a dragon. Upon rescuing Fiona, the pair discover that she is cursed to transform into an ogress every night, and Shrek soon finds himself developing an unfamiliar bond.

Since the release of the first instalment, there have been many more sequels and spin-offs: Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek The Third (2007), Shrek Forever After (2010), and more. Additionally, the film series has also spun out into a Broadway and West End production titled Shrek The Musical.
