Comic Book Origins

Envisioned by writer/artist Jack Kirby, the Eternals first appeared in 1976 in their debut comic book series of the same name. They have a humanoid appearance but were created by the Celestials to protect the Earth from powerful threats – namely, the destructive Deviants.

Gifted with enhanced powers, the Eternals can perform incredible feats, including superhuman strength, flight, teleporting, reading/controlling minds, and more. By consequence, they are some of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2021, The Eternals was directed by Chloe Zhao and written by Kaz and Ryan Firpo. Adapting the comic book source material, the film follows the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), with the eponymous Eternals reuniting to protect humanity from the Deviants.

The film brings together a star-studded cast: Angelina Jolie (Thena), Richard Madden (Ikaris), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Lia McHugh (Sprite), Don Lee (Gilgamesh), Kit Harington (Dane Whitman), Gemma Chan (Sersi), and Barry Keoghan (Druig).

These characters follow in the footsteps of actor Josh Brolin’s Thanos, who is known in the comics to be an offshoot of the Eternals species.
