Sonic Races onto the Big Screen *WARNING: MIGHT HAVE SPOILERS*

I went into this adaptation with low expectations as video game movies don't exactly have the best track-record at the Box Office. With this, I was pleasantly surprised how entertaining, funny and heart-warming this was. The cast give great performances, particularly James Marsden, Tika Sumpter & Jim Carrey stealing the scene by chewing every one he is in. This is vintage Jim Carrey from his Ace Ventura days. Basically imagine if Ventura got tired of being a Pet Detective and just decided to be a super-villain. The redesign of Sonic does a great service as the former would have made the movie jarring with the uncanny valley look to it. I could see what the movie was going for from the premise of making him look realistic, but at the same time it didn't look like Sonic. Tyson Hesse made the best of both words by steal having realistic atheistics but at the same time making Sonic recognisable to those that have played his games for years. The only negative aspects I can grant is that the movie is too short, but taking into account where we live in a world where some movies like to go passed the 2 hour mark to maybe 3 hours, it's actually refreshing to have a movie that's under 2 hours almost akin to the 80s and 90s where movies like Back to the Future, Short Circuit & Jurassic Park were 2 hours or under. Maybe there's possible scenes that were cut as the Producers were worried of well this could have done had they not been omitted. So for 99 minutes is ample. The plot for the most part is simplistic, but at the same time if you're expecting Oscar-bait writing from a video game film adaptation, then this ain't your movie. The road trip aspect of the film probably features some more of the charming scenes where Sonic & Tom are bonding as they travel to San Francisco to retrieve his rings in order to hop between worlds. The Bar scene where Sonic is checking off items on his Bucket list where you see his face lighting up just being able to have a good time with a friend is just charming and just makes Sonic's character sweet when you consider that he's had so many years in isolation. The Sonic is definitely worth a look for long-established fans that grew up with the Blue Blur and will likely be an avenue to introduce this character to a new generation. I liken this to that of Back to the Future, Jurassic Park and Thunderbirds as they are generational properties where fans have grown up with them and introduce them to their children and it just keeps on going. Sonic will do the same. 4.5/5 Stars
