Love it
5This one I bought just because I like GITS. I was not deceived. I watched it a long ago and this has been added to my collection along with my mangas, figures and comics. A must have if you love GITS.

Manga UK clearly need some quality control
2For some reason, Manga UK decided to replace the old subtitles from their previous releases with a new translation. The new translation is completely riddled with errors. It includes the use of slang terms like "Yobbo", it goes back and forth on what gender to refer to the Puppet Master with, and is in general terrible. What went wrong? The case is quite nice, and the restored image quality is good, even if the image format is slightly off. The sound is still in mono though, and there is no real extras included, not even the ones included on the old DVD release.

5Beautiful set, front and back. It is safe to say that it was worth waiting for Zavvi to release this the way it was meant to be

A Must-Have!
4Lots of things being said about this Blu-ray release I still think it's great. Of course it could be better but I strongly recommend this to all anime fans. C'mon, it's classic after all and although with some flaws this steelbook is really ok.

Nearly perfect
4I think this is the closest we'll get to a HD release of the original Ghost in the Shell film. The actual film is in decent quality. It's still grainy but I've learned to live with it. While it's widescreen there are very slim black bars along the top and bottom. I hadn't actually noticed them until the film was nearly over, so they're not distracting or 'ugly' in any way. The sound seemed quiet in one or two scenes, one of which being when Matoko is talking to Togusa in the car early in the film. I'm not sure if this is something that has always been an issue with this film. There is no extra content included on this bluray. It is just the film and nothing more. The box is lovely, from the art to the metallic touches here and there. The art on the inside of the box is also great and was the piece used for the original release of the film. Regarding the booklet that comes with this package, it's nothing special. Some facts and some low quality screenshots of the film is what is contained within it. I wasn't really that interested in it to begin with so I never bothered reading it all (although I may come back to it at a later date). VERDICT: Buy this if you hate the CGI scenes in the 2.0 release of this film as this is the only way to view the full unedited original version in HD. The lovely box is an added benefit but the lackluster extras (or lack of) make it feel less like a special edition and more like a regular release.

Great Film, Disappointing Anniversary
3With almost 2 years since the original release Manga UK have decided to celebrate with this delightful Steelbook Blu-Ray release. The packaging is fantastic, a wonderful illustration for the for the box and a 20 page pamphlet with a history of written by Andrew Osmond. The disc is where the problems start, but before then I must mention that the picture quality for the film is great. The first problem is with the extras, there are none. With this being such a special release I was expecting some new extras to be made for it, well they decided to not only add nothing new, but also not include anything from the DVD release, this is highly disappointing. The last problem lies with the audio and subtitles, the English language track seems to be missing some sound effects and the subtitles have been simplified. I would recommend this to any GITS fan, despite the numinouses flaws, if only for the packaging.

Windowboxed and washed out
3The picture quality is better than the 1.0 version included with the 2.0 US Blu-ray, but still not that great. These are the main issues: - Windowboxed: there are black borders on all four sides. You could enable overscan, but that of course shouldn’t be necessary and further diminishes picture quality. - If you've done any kind of calibration for your TV, nothing will be solid black and colors will look very dull. The whole movie sort of has a gray haze to it. You'll probably have to mess up your calibration to improve contrast and saturation. - No extras at all. Not even trailers or anything that has been included in the older DVD releases. Pros: - Steelbook case cover is nice with some parts of the image being reflective - Better than previous 1.0 releases on Blu-ray. Unfortunately it’s only “good” (3:5) compared to the “terrible” (1:5) one included with 2.0. I don’t have the 2007 Japanese Blu-ray to compare it to, but have read this is the same source but a higher quality encoding. Assuming there won’t be a better release anytime soon, and given that 1.0 was last released on Blu-ray in Japan in 2007, this might still be worth getting if you don’t like 2.0. My understanding is the US release will probably be the same except maybe the subtitling translation (no “rubbish”) and without a steelbook. I’m glad I at least have the steelbook as I am otherwise frustrated and disappointed by this release. The booklet is mostly text and doesn’t have any really interesting artwork. Most of the images are low resolution screenshots.

This is the original version of Ghost in the Shell!
5It would be unfair to rate this release before I've watched the finished version, but I do know it is the same Blu-ray master used to create the original 2004 Blu-ray release for Japan from Bandai Entertainment. Which, up until now has not been made available to any other territory outside of the land of the rising sun. Manga is celebrating the release of this, the original HD telecine transfer of the 1995 original by packaging it in a beautiful limited edition Scanavo steelbook along with a brand new 22-page booklet. This is the HD/Blu-ray version of GITS that the fans have been working for and should not in any way be confused with the 2009 release from Kodansha and Manga called "Ghost In The Shell 2.0" (aka Ghost In The Shell Redux), which was very controversial at the time for recolouring the whole film to fit more closely with the 2004 sequel, GITS: Innocence as well as featuring brand new CG generated scenes This version features all of the original animation and the original colour palette.
