Harry Potter Box Set

We told ourselves this was for the kids when they were old enough but in truth, that's a few years a way so it was really for us. Watching them in relatively quick succession has given us the opportunity to appreciate the whole saga in one go and has highlighted not only the brilliance of JK Rowling but how well made the movies actually were. Whilst slightly condensed in parts, the movies are all some of the better book-to-screen transitions I have experienced and by choosing blu-ray, we've been able to enjoy the richness and vitality of hi-def. A really enjoyable experience and at this price, a keepsake well worth investing in.

Great set of films

5

A nice complete set of all the Harry Potter films and they really are a great set! All the films are very well made with such a lot of detail in the sets and costumes with everything very much as I imagined it from the books. As with the books, the first two films are mostly fairly light, with plenty of humour and they gradually get darker from film three onwards. On first viewing I wasn't so keen on the third film, but now that I've seen it more than once I do enjoy that one too - I think that the first time it just seemed quite a jump from the lightness of the first two films to the darker feel of the third and onwards. The characterisation and the actors who take the parts are really spot on. The films are really like a "who's who" of great British actors with many famous names involved and clearly having a great time playing their parts. The child actors who play Harry, Ron and Hermione really do a great job and you can definitely watch them grow, mature and gain confidence as the films go on. It's so nice that the same actors were used throughout the films so the continuity is excellent - it's always so annoying when a key part has a different actor. The only exception to that is the unavoidable change in actor playing Dumbledore due to the very sad death of Richard Harris, who I have to admit is really Dumbledore for me. I have only a couple of niggles - a swear word is used in the fourth film, which feels unnecessary and out of character. I do wonder if that was done deliberately to ensure the 12-rating for the film due to it's darker nature. The other niggle is a change from the book near the end of the sixth film... but I'll let you find out for yourself and not give spoilers! Overall a really well-made and enjoyable set of films in which you can enjoy watching the main children grow up, detach yourself from reality and delight in little magical moments and details like all the labour-saving devices in the Weasley house, mishaps in transfiguration classes etc and also enjoy a multi-layered story full of characters with real depth. There are also lots of interesting extras on the discs which give great insight into the creation of the films and the worlds in which they are set, although I have to admit that I haven't watched them all yet. Definitely recommended and a great bargain at the moment too!

About foreigner

5

I want to make a point about the other language. There are a lot of languages for the episodes from 1 to 5 included but less for 6, 7 etc 7.5. It may not be important for English people but it's pretty important for people like me (French living in Japan with girlfriend).
