Kill la Kill

5

I have already watched this anime 4 times, and I just wanted to own the collector's edition. When I saw the price had dropped I immediately bought it. I have also just purchased part 3. It's annoying that Zavvi doesn't have part 2 as they're the cheapest to buy parts 1 & 3, that I have found. The anime is great, take my word on it.

A bewildering but enjoyable start

4

Kill la Kill is made by much of the team behind the classic series Gurren Lagann, so if you've seen that show you'll have some idea of what to expect. A loving parody/deconstruction/possible reconstruction of magical girl anime (Sailor Moon et al), it follows an orphaned teen searching for her father's killer who stumbles across a sentient school uniform that can give her incredible fighting abilities when it drinks her blood. (This is the part of the show that makes some kind of sense.) Essentially, think the most gloriously over-the-top fight scenes you can imagine then double them. That's about the level Kill la Kill operates at. A high-energy, frequently very funny action-comedy with fanservice levels so shameless you stop noticing (by the end of the show, both female and male characters spend more time naked than clothed. It's actually a plot point.) This boxset takes in the first nine episodes, which is actually the weakest part of the show as it takes a while to get accustomed to its hyperactive style, and the surprising depth of the characterisation doesn't really get a look in until about the halfway point. While enjoyable, it's a little bewildering at first. The Blu-rays themselves look gloriously crisp, and come with the excellent Japanese original soundtrack along with the strong English dub. Unfortunately, there aren't any other real on-disc extras to speak of, just clean versions of the opening and ending sequences. However, what it does offer is a gorgeous art book. Coming in at the same dimensions as a Blu-ray case, it has a mixture of storyboards and final art from the opening episodes (the full storyboard of the opening sequence is especially welcome, as it moves so fast that there's no way to fully appreciate it when watching). The panels seem to have got out of order in places during the book's creation, but it doesn't matter too much. Basically, if you haven't seen Kill la Kill give it a try. If you have, this lovingly designed boxset is the best way to keep your own copy.

This bluray edition is great. Two br with the first 9 chapters of the series, with a complete book of design and groundworks. Recommended.

Review of product, not the show

4

It's a nice box with a nice design. Everything works. It's a shame the whole series split into 3 different box sets and sold at a high price, but if you ever see it on sale like i did; buy it immediately. I do not regret this purchase.

I love it!

4

I love Kill la Kill a lot so this was definitly worth the but especially considering how cheep it was being sold for! Definitly worth getting for any collector! I'll highly recommend to any anime fan! Zavvi's service was also great. The product shipped on time and arrived really fast and only in a few days! The reason why it was brought down to a four star though was because when it arrived, the corners off the box were squished and dented a bit. It's not a very big issue but as a collecter it is to me. Other then that it was great! I Recommend very highly!

Awesome for a Kill la Kill fan

I love this show and with this box I have the first episodes in Blu-ray and an artbook. Also I bought it here at a very nice price. Expensive if you only want to have the show.

Pull the Trigger!

5

A fun and action packed show from Trigger, wrapped up in a fancy package from Anime Limited. Kill la Kill is a madcap epic, combined with a coming of age tale about clothes and the people who wear them. This show is ideal for people who like a compelling tale, dressed up in the clothing of absurdity. If you were fond of Gurren Lagann, this show should work well for you as it has a similar feel, even if the giant robot quotient is far lower. While some people may be put off by the price, I can say that the quality of this package is well worth it. Having also purchased the Japanese Blu Ray volume 1(Japanese only, no subs), the UK release is of a similar quality for the on-disc content, with more episodes per volume and a comparable artbook, although lacking the soundtrack CD of the Japanese release. The sturdy and attractive UK box makes for a good keepsake for collection and display. Overall, this release looks and feels like a premium collectors piece, that any anime fan would be proud to put on their shelves.
