Marchlands is clever the way it shows different decades but it does take concentration to know what is going on most of the time. By the third episode it becomes clearer that the story shows certain characters right from the initial story of the drowning of "Alice" (who was never alive from the start of our viewing) to the present day (similarity in facial features of characters is good). It is a novel story with twists and turns along the way. Probably only worth watching once, I don't think it is a classic to be watched time after time.

It really does have you on the end of your seat, i really enjoyed this. It worked really well over all three era's. It didn't get confusing and you could really relate to the characters. The casting was brilliant, it was hard to imagine tessa peake jones as anything other than del boys "significant other", but she played the part of interfering mother in law really well. Overall a fantastic drama, one that can be watched again and again.

I'm in the middle of watching this, Just waiting for the last episode. and I CAN'T WAIT!!! Really good story lines that are hard to understand at the beginning but are now coming together. I was really spoked quite a few times. In fact I have goosebumps just thinking of it.

I am leaping to the defence of Marchlands after reading some very sniffy reviews is the 'quality' press. Deliciously creepy (by this I mean you won't be too scared to the put the light out afterwards), it is a tale of a house and the three families who live there in three different decades, all troubled by the same event, the (accidental?) drowning in 1968 of a little girl called Alice who appears never to have left the house since, drawing attention to heself by means of water.... The action swings easily back and forth between '68, '87 and 2010, and as a bonus, showing us the fashions, hair styles, decor of each period. Once you begin to watch, the story becomes compelling as you gradually pick up the pieces of the jigsaw and identify with the characters. If like me (call me old-fashioned)you prefer a story with a beginning, a middle and an end, you will enjoy Marchlands. (Beware... this Marchlands has NO CONNECTION WHATSOEVER with the novel of the same name.)
