Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World certainly is an attack on the senses, opening with a seizure inducing title sequence leaving the viewer unsure as to what transpired and a taste of what to expect. The film unfolds at a frenetic pace with little breaks throughout, but the action is good and the dialogue is solid for the most part and all the characters feel fleshed out and realistic so this is no real issue. Wright's trademark style is ever so present throughout and, like his previous works, is packed to the brim with references and homages to other works which adds a whole new layer of enjoy-ability to those who are 'in-the-know'. The only thing it suffers from, however, is the feeling of repetitiveness that sets in during the final act as we tune in to yet another boss battle and a climax that feels slightly out of place as we have no real reason to dislike the extremely likeable antagonist. Apart from this slight criticism, the film exceeds expectations and leaves the viewer feeling satisfied and exhilarated by the experience. The DVD features 3 feature commentaries and the second disc houses exactly what you'd expect, but doesn't dissapoint.

nerd awesomeness

Tons of funny video game references (old & new), the ultimate nerd loser anti-hero Michael Cera, and the cherry on top: Jason Schwartzman as the main baddie. What could be better for us children of the arcade era?

Absolute favourite film of the year that has now turned into one of my favourite films of all time. It's amazing how pretty much every detail is exact to the books from their script to clothing. Total must see film!

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Underneath the KAPOW! of swinging fists and funky crunch of duelling guitars is a warm heart beating digital blossoms, as the lovelorn Pilgrim fights for the hand of his love as if he were a modern day knight, with Smashing Pumpkins “Zero” t-shirt and bass guitar in place of armour and sword. Making it all work is Wright’s enthusiastic and detailed direction. A brilliant display of style is presented, as Wright throws everything at the screen and not only makes it stick, but creates a new breed of sci-fi/fantasy./action/romantic comedy that is unique in look and feel, with a fun vibe felt throughout and made flesh in its infectiously good performances. Brandon Routh has fun mocking his Superman persona, Ellen Wong’s aching over exuberance is both heartfelt and funny, and Jason Schwartzman brings the perfect smarmy vibe to his villain. Yet it is Michael Cera who impresses the most. Coming off his fabulous turn in Youth in Revolt, Cera has defied his critics and transformed himself into a one of a kind leading man, exuding a cheeky rebellion and –in this case – portraying a convincing action hero

Romantic Comedy meets Video Games

5

As romantic comedys go, this is as silly and absurd as they come which will appeal to kids everywhere; and the kid inside everyone else. Michael Cera plays a fantastic part throughout this videogame homage, full of witty, dry, but loving comedic performances. Gamers alike will constantly be reminded of their fun behind a d-pad as there are constant references to the world of videogames. Wether that be 'colleting coins' or 'gaining an extra life' a smile is always required for these subtle puns. A film full of nostalgic trips through comic fantasy and the 8-bit series of videogames.

An epic of epic epicness

Prepare to have a new favourite movie, the cover says. Scott Pilgrim vs The World isn't that good. For me, that movie is Inception. Scott Pilgrim is however very silly, very funny, very enjoyable, well acted and well made. Michael Cera is excellent as Scott Pilgrim, even if he is playing his Superbad character again he does what he does very well. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is very good as Ramona Flowers, the love of Scott's life, while Kieran Culkin steals the film as Scott's gay roommate and there are good performances from the likes of Chris Evans and Brandon Routh as 2 of Ramona's evil exes. The fight scenes are excellent, very cleverly and imaginatively done, playing out like a bizzare live action video game. While this isn't as good as the superb Shaun Of The Dead or Hot Fuzz, this is a very good Hollywood debut for director Edgar Wright.

Scott Pilgrim is a film where youth is power and power is music, video games, and confronting your exes with how great your current hook up is, but like most hipsters you meet, it is more impressed with itself than anything else
