A Castle-Full of Princesses

The Princess line is a popular franchise owned by The Walt Disney Company. The franchise includes a selection of characters from the company’s animated films and series.

Some of the Princesses included in the line-up are Snow White (1937), Cinderella (1950), Aurora (aka “Sleeping Beauty”) (1959), Ariel (aka “The Little Mermaid”) (1989), Belle (aka “Beauty” from “Beauty and the Beast”) (1991), Princess Jasmine (from “Aladdin”) (1992), Pocahontas (1995), Mulan (1998), Tiana (from “The Princess and The Frog”) (2009), Rapunzel (from “Tangled”) (2010), Merida (from “Brave”) (2012), and Moana (2016).

Several of the Disney Princess characters are based on actual fairy tales originally written by the Brothers Grimm. Some examples are Tangled, Snow White, and Cinderella.

Some other films are based on stories originally written by Hans Christian Andersen, such as The Little Mermaid. And, from further afar, Mulan is based on an ancient Chinese myth.

Childhood Icons

Despite their antiquated routes, Disney’s animated versions of these stories are far more child-friendly than their original versions.

The Princess characters have developed throughout the franchise from being quite traditional into being icons for young people of any gender.

The importance of ‘True Love’s Kiss’ has weakened over time, and more modern Princesses like Mulan, Moana, and Tiana are key examples of how feminism, equality, and more well-developed characters have been written into the characters in more recent years.
