Bigger, Better, Disgaea-ier

5

This iteration of Disgaea is by far the best yet, adding even more features to an already cram-packed series. The magichange system added in Disgaea 3 has been expanded upon, allowing you now to fuse two monsters together to create a giant monster (and even then magichange them into a weapon, later you'll even be able to equip 2 giant magichange weapons!) The evil symbols (that replace the clubs of 3) now stack, so that you can have 1 person belonging to several different clubs which is a great improvement. There is also a new range of online features, including sending your senators to other people senates. The biggest let down to this game is that the cast isn't quite as fun as the previous versions. One final warning is that a patch has been released to fix a couple of things, which is great, however it's a whopping 2.7GB so can take quite a while to download. Overall if you like Disgaea games, this is by far the best yet, and if you've never played a Disgaea game, this is probably a good place to start.

Another Disgaea title, and any fan of the series will find themselves perfectly at home. You start out as the formerly Tyrant of the Netherworld, the vampire Valvatorez. He now work as a prinny instructor in Hades and due to a promise once made to a pure hearted woman he no longer drink human blood and have thus lost his power. Obsessed with keeping promises the story begin after a tutorial chapter (in which you teach prinnies the basics of Disgaea tactics) when the warden of Hades (Axel) abduct all the prinnies to exterminate them. Having promised to give each prinny a sardine, Valvatorez set out to keep his promise and the story go on from there. The cast this time is made up from a good range of weirdos like Valvatorez servant, the werewolf Fenrich (who is the evil character in the lot). Fuka, a girl who failed to become a prinny as they were out of prinny skin (she ended up with only a hat) who doesnt acknowledge that she is dead. Emizel who might be the most useless grim reaper in history. Desco, a final boss in training that calls Fuka as big sis. The thief angel Volcanus who collect money that the Netherworld owes to Celestia. The useless Warden Axel. The archangel Flonne that probably suffer from some mental problem or is just on drugs. Together you take on demons, humans, aliens and bosses of various kinds. This title stay true to previous installments and you have a nice cast of ridiculous characters, story missions, item world, senate, a myriad of character types to build your army from, tons of equipment, downright silly humor, endless grinding (if that is your thing), an annoying camera (as usual) and finally, good value for you investment as Disgaea 4 offers many hours of fun gameplay. To enjoy the title you probably should like anime and tactical gameplay. Like previous installments you move around on pretty small maps that have various obstacles in the form of enemies, color squares (on which the placement of Geo block becomes important), height and so on. Between battles you go to Hades where you have shops, trainers, various characters to talk to, healer and so on. You also have the option to visit your campaign headquarters where you create new characters, call the senate for various reasons and build structures that give special bonuses on the battle maps. To get senators to do things your way you have to bribe them, get them drunk, put them to sleep with chloroform etc. and if all that fail, you can just beat some sense into them. Bribe materials are found only in stores that come as random special events in the item world (or in chests) so trips there are necessary. The tactical fighting offers much enjoyment if you like turn based combat with tons of cool abilities and characters. The ability to use monster characters as weapons and boost monsters by combining them to a big one. You can capture enemies by throwing them into your base panel and then torture them to either join you or to reveal treasure chests. While in the item world, you sometimes get attacked by pirates which you then have to fight and this bring us to some of the added multiplayer content. After a while you get to create your own pirate ships, ship parts can be found in chests or aquired through captured pirates. You then build a ship, place characters on it and have the option to challenge other players pirates and climb leaderboards or unleash your pirates on other players item worlds on raids (you can chose to either help or fight other players). You also have a map editor to create your own maps and share them with other players. The main annoyance with the game is the camera (as with previous installments). Graphics has been upgraded, but you still have the option to play with more pixelated sprites if that is your thing. Languages are English or Japanese and you can change whenever and subtitle language is English. All in all, I give this game a 5/5 as it offers many hours of gameplay, challenging gameplay, weird humor and ultimately good value for your money.
