The Metal Gear Solid saga in shiny new HD pants!

I have to say what a pleasure it is being given the chance to relive some of my favourite moments in gaming, from one of the most cherished franchises in gaming. Of course, being a fan, I have played all but one of the games before. I never owned a PSP so never got to savour Peace Walker. The other two I play regularly on my trusty PS2. However, not like this. The update to HD has done wonders for these titles. Yes, it is only an up-conversion as opposed to a full re-texture or rebuild, but the difference for someone playing on a modern HD display is something that cannot be overstated. Not only is everything sharper, but the games are now presented in full 16:9 widescreen. This is not achieved by stretching or cutting the top and bottom, but by actually giving us a genuine widescreen frame, so there are things on screen we don't see when playing the old versions. With a franchise as cinematic as Metal Gear Solid, it is true now more than ever that Hideo Kojima has been attempting to marry the worlds of video gaming and cinema. For me, he has done so with aplomb. The three games have also been mastered in full surround sound, so those with home cinema systems will be able to make the experience even more cinematic. It is good to confirm that Metal Gear Solid 3 does use the updated, fully controllable 3rd person camera view from the special edition Subsistence, and this greatly improves an already brilliant game. It is my favourite title of the saga, so this was potentially a deal breaker for me. Im glad to say they made a wise choice. If [for some bizarre reason] a player prefers to play with the antiquated camera from the original Snake Eater, this can be achieved with a single click. Metal Gear Solid 2 plays as it ever did, which for me is great because if it isnt broke, you dont fix it. Peace Walker plays differently of course, owing to the controls being adapted for the PS3 pad. By most accounts this has improved the game, as we now have a second analogue stick to control the camera, which makes for a more modern feel, or so Im told. Bar the omissions of Metal Gear Online, the Duel Mode and Snake vs Monkey mode from Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence, along with the skateboarding game from MGS2 Substance, we have been provided with the best of the extra features from those two special edition releases. So that means we get the original two 'Metal Gear' titles from Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence, that were previously only available on the Japanese MSX home computer system, and we get the 'Alternative Missions', 'VR Missions', and 'Snake Tales' from Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance. Enough Metal Gear for even the most diehard fans, Im sure you will agree. In all, this is an unmissable release for fans of the series, and also for those who came to the series as late as Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PS3. For those people, seeing the technical evolution of the series should be very interesting indeed. Id even advise gamers who have never played a Metal Gear Solid title to take a punt. At this price you can hardly go wrong. Id also like to say to Xbox gamers: Welcome on board! The more the merrier!

This game is great, love playing the old Metal Gear Solid's again. Plus I received the game on day of release so I was happy about that.

Kojima's masterpiece is back in HD!

joining the increasing number of revamped last generation games, the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection includes high-definition remastered versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, two of the best games on the PS2, as well as ports of the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, the often forgotten MSX2 games that began the series. However, the biggest draw here is Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the formerly PSP-exclusive masterpiece, now remastered for consoles! Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Sons of Liberty also takes Metal Gear Solid into the realm of the absurd. Early on, a villain from the previous game shows up possessed by the arm of your evil twin brother; a military weapon inexplicably resembles a giant mechanical lizard and even roars; and one of Raiden's mission control contacts is his girlfriend Rose, who continually brings up their relationship while he's supposed to be rescuing hostages. It often feels like Raiden and Rose are mere kids playing make believe, and one can't help but wonder how tongue-in-cheek it's meant to be. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater This episode goes back 40 years to tell the story of Snake's father and his relationship with his mentor, The Boss, who'd recently defected to the Soviet Union under mysterious pretences. The early hours drag on with a poor cut-scene-to-play-time ratio, but once the stage is set, Snake Eater leaves you to play for hours on end with few substantial interruptions. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Due to the dearth of buttons on its native platform, controls have been scaled down. You can't crawl, slide along walls, or aim in first-person, but the game is designed around this with lots of waist-high cover for you to shuffle behind while crouching. Unlike the older titles, you can move and shoot at the same time -- something made more intuitive in this collection thanks to the right analogue stick. Initially, Peace Walker seems derivative, combining the modern shooter controls of MGS4 with the simplicity of MGS2 and the mostly outdoor aesthetic of MGS3. While its stealth never deviates from that assessment, Peace Walker's overall formula is drastically different. Metal Gear Solid is a potpourri of ideas that insists you take the good with the bad. Certainly indulgent, it's also melancholy, exhilarating, clever, and ludicrous. It's never entirely clear what, if anything, Kojima and company are taking seriously - and the end result, in this collection, is a fascinating chronicle of one of video games' strangest successes.

Must have

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is a total must for die hard fans and also for newbies who want to play one of the best sagas ever. This is a great chance to have the Peace Walker chapter which was previously only available on the psp system.

Ever since I heard about this collection coming out, I was very excited & could not wait to get my hands on it. I'm still waiting because I live in the UK but it's just a week away until I can finally play these amazing games once again, now in glorious HD with trophy support which I am very happy with as I'm a big trophy hunter. Wish the original or Twin Snakes was included in the collection as I've never played TS before, but I have the original MGS via PSN. But I am happy with Peace Walker as I've never played it either so it will be a new experience for me. I played MGS2 & MGS3 non stop back in the day & I still do When I want a bit of stealth action with brilliant stories to follow as well. At last, these are now back in HD, the way they should be, with all the bonuses from Substance & Subsistance including the 2 classic NES games. All I can say about MGS is that to me, it's one of the best franchises out there & still is. With amazing story telling, gorgeous graphics, superb voice acting, brilliant game play & hours upon hours of fun. Even more hours now that it has trophies to collect. I think that this will be the best HD collection out there & I highly recommend that you add this to your game collection. I've pre-ordered my limited edition & again, I highly recommend that you do too, you'll be very disappointed if you don't. 11/10

All games have been remastered to 720p HD. As a fan of the series, the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is brilliant! I absolutely adore this set! Metal Gear Solid 2, 3 and from the PlayStation Portable (PSP), Peace Walker, have all been remastered and upscaled to accommodate today's Television Sets and Video Game Systems to enjoy them in their full glory. I highly recommend this to any MGS fan and maybe those who are new to the series, it's really that good!
