Nintendo continues innovating

5

I've had the machine for a while now and can say that the Wii U is yet another great little machine from Nintendo. As with all of their coinsoles though, it's setting out to do things a little differently. There is the obvious innovation in the shape of the new game pad and the Kyoto firm's insistence on sticking with existing graphics chips that hardly set the pulse racing. The biggest new feature of the Wii U for me, is the online infrastructure. As a PS3, Xbox 360, and PC gamer for the past few years, I've come to accept a certain way of gaming online. In the space of one console, Nintendo have completely changed the way I look at taking a console online. It has the usual Netflix, YouTube and lovefilm apps and a snappy little browser. But holding it all together is the MiiVerse. This new platform is absent of all the annoying, non-game related advertising rubbish that my Xbox and ps3 try to ram down my throat. Instead you have groups of miis crowding around game logos to indicate the hottest topics of the moment, complemented by what I can only describe as the natural evolution of the online forum. It's a strange hybrid of social network (albeit one specifically for games) coupled with gaming discussion, fan art produced on the tablet and videos or notes posted by the games developers. It feels so far removed from the cold, shop-window style of both Microsoft and Sony's dashboards that I honestly don't know why it hasn't been done sooner- and that's always the mark of a genius idea. Graphically the machine isn't doing anything you won't have seen before on the 360 or PS3. But there is something wonderful about seeing Nintendo's artwork in HD for the first time. Ultimately the Wii U will be left lagging behind the PS4 and new Xbox but I don't think the difference will be anything like as pronounced as the gap between the Wii and current crop of HD consoles. The games will set it apart though and the amazing game pad with its myriad functions (streaming multiplayer COD in bed on a Sunday morning is something everyone should try) will result in another slew of Nintendo greats along with plenty of third party classics as well hopefully. To summarise then, if you are looking for a big graphical leap from the ps3 or the 360 you should give the Wii U a miss. Similarly, if you are after an all-in-one media box that plays blu rays, streams from your home server and acts as a PVR, the Wii U won't be what you're looking for. If, on the other hand, you miss when games machines were primarily for playing games then you will really enjoy the Wii U. If you have to share the family tv and are tired of getting kicked off your games to let the wife watch American idol then you should also seriously consider getting one for the streaming functionality. You should also seriously consider putting a Wii U in your living room if you enjoy same-room multiplayer as Nintendo seem to really be pushing for its return with the use of the Wii U pad.

I've been enjoying playing my Wii U for a few weeks now finally I can play proper games that were only on other consoles, HD graphics are awesome the game pad takes a while to get used to but I'll get there also I'm looking forward to buying great games in the coming months, another Nintendo console that hopefully will be part of my living room for years to come.

The Wii U is a fantastic console with a difference the game pad . It makes the difference between Microsoft and Sony, and is a pleasure to use. Netflix is brilliant on there too.

This console offers great potential and innovation but lacks games and content currently. Still at the price it was I had to snap one up thinking of games like zelda, mario kart, super smash brothers, pikmin and super mario, I think it's worth the wait. Just hope some good games come soon to realise the potential of the machine.

Good Fun

I bought this Wii U Console: 32GB Nintendo Land Premium Pack for my son who is 12 years old. He says it is good, but it takes some time to set up due to the downloads. It's not an 'out of the box and start to play' console. He says the graphics are good, and an improvement on the Wii.

Impressive upgrade to old Wii

The Wii U is fantastic! Slightly bigger than its predecessor, but looks just as good. I got the black version, which goes very well with all the blu-ray/ surround sound/ cable box etc. The new controller takes a bit of getting used to, but once you do, its actually very good, being able to control the TV from it to change the input to the game hdmi setting, or voume, power etc. So basically, sit down with the game pad, turn on the wii U, the TV and change to the right setting without needing to get up! Brilliant! The old controllers work with the wii U too, in the same way as before. The initial set up can feel a bit slow from first turning on/ accounts/ internet set up etc, but once you've done this, its much quicker than the original wii from turning on. You can also play the old wii games, which basically restarts the console in Wii mode and looks exactly the same as before! Played mario kart without any trouble at all, except that we didn't move any save data, but you could almost certainly do that with a usb stick or something, if desired. Looking forward to some more release titles like HD Mario, mario kart, zelda etc, as currently have nintendo land, which annoyed me at first go, and since I bought mario bros wii u, haven't looked at Nintendo Land again, but it does seem a bit more like a "get to know how to use your Wii U" demo type game. But like I said, haven't spent much time on it, and it did come as part of the console, so shouldn't mark down for that! Great buy though, and great price.

OK, so there aren't many games out for the Wii U at the minute, but they are coming. This is by far the best game console I have owned. I also have a PS3 but that doesn't come close. I have so far got Super Mario and Nintendo Land and subscribed to Netflix. I can't recommend this console enough, especially at this price!
