First Must Have Title

5

Super Mario 3D land is a must have for every 3DS owned. This game is a mix between the short and crisp levels of classic mario, alongside challenging missions of modern mario. The game contains 95 levels divided over 16 worlds: the first 8 are piece of cake for experienced gamers, but the 8 latter ones are a great challenge. The graphics are amazing: probably the best graphics yet for the console. The 3D effect adds a lot: you can find hidden paths and 1UPs in tiny cravens found by looking deeper in the screen and much more. To conclude, This game is the first killer app for this console and will be a great gift for any gamer.

Mario Returns

5

Despite the title, Mario 3D Land isn't a fully 3D world as with Mario Galaxy. The game is more an isometric (semi 3D) game world, but it works perfectly on Nintendo's newest handheld. The added depth from using the 3D slider is perfect for this game, though it isn't essential it does help when making jumps and landing from heights. As is par for the course, various suits can be found by hitting blocks, each of which has different abilities. The game even gives you some to help if it sees you struggle by providing you with powerups and then eventually by letting you skip the level if you want. While some may moan about these options, you can always choose not to use them and it opens the game up to new players who don't have the skills to complete the more difficult sections. In the end this is a classic Mario with a 3D touch and it's a perfect fit for the 3DS.

must buy.

Excellent game, great graphics and a game for all age groups. It starts off easy and then gets challenging, easily the best game out on the 3DS at the moment, at least until Mario Kart 7.

A great Mario title!

4

4 stars, not 5. But not to worry, this game is a fabulous handheld title that will keep you entertained for a LONG time. As of writing this, I have beaten the main storyline and was pleasantly surprised with the extra content after defeating Bowser! So if your impression was that this game was short, think again. Not to mention the levels contain hidden collectable coins which get trickier later on in the game, so there is definitely a reason to replay for you 100% aimers. Replaying the levels is just plain fun anyway, the worlds are not very realistic and are way out there, which is what I think Mario has been begging for in this generation. The success of the Mario Galaxy titles and the New Super Mario Bros. series has spurred inspiration to mix the best of both games. Mario controls around a 3D, abstract, platform-riddled space just like in Mario Galaxy, yet lacks any form of attack other than jumping (unless aided by one of the MANY power-ups) along with a time limit from the more classically inspired New Super Mario Bros. games. This game feels like a fresh Mario title, though many gamers may be put off by the lack of story or reasoning, I think Mario shouldn't need to develop itself in that direction. Miyamoto explicitly demanded that the plaforming Mario titles be as stream-lined as possible to allow re-playability and pick-up-and-play gaming. Handheld games are meant to be easy to get into, since people tend to use them on the go, during a journey or while waiting for something briefly. Super Mario 3D Land is a MUST HAVE title for anyone with a 3DS. The first half of the game is relatively easy, because, you know, Nintendo expect kids to play video games too. But for you hardcore Mario fans out there, the last half of the game can get infuriatingly hard, especially when aiming for the hidden coins. You will not be disappointed by the difficulty in this game, it has been tailored to feel like a classic Mario game in a 3D space. My only complaints about the game is the Tanooki suit. Yes, everyone went mental when they heard it was going to be in the game. But as I played through, I noticed how much easier it makes the platforming. Some challenges can be bypassed by hovering over them and I felt bad for doing that. But once I finish the game, I'm going to do a "No Tanooki Suit" run, to give myself a challenge. In conclusion, the game has solid visuals (especially in Bowser's castle when it rains), solid music, solid controls and a very universal difficulty curve. The perfect title for any 3DS owner and a perfect gift idea for Christmas. Especially with Zavvi at their amazing price. (Cheapest one I found while preordering the game).
