Lego Potter

4

Like it or loath it, there's no denying that the Harry Potter franchise is popular, and combined with the bouncy sense of humour Traveller's Tales have invested in their Lego series this offering becomes worth, at least, a look. Fans of the previous Lego games will find nothing new in the basic mechanics of the game, but to represent that the characters can cast more than one spell in the series, Traveller's Tales have opted for a 'spell wheel' which can either be called up to the center of the screen so all can be seen or at the press of a button the spells (and each of the main characters' unique abilities) can be cycled through. It seems a little cumbersome at first, but it soon becomes second nature - though for the most part you won't be changing from Wingardium Leviosa except for specific need. The hub of Hogwarts serves as far more than just the doorway to the levels - as, being the students you are, you must attend lessons...which in turn unlock new spells and abilities. And to help you find your way around this enormous building, Nearly-Headless Nick (in lego form, of course) has been roped in to guide you to your next destination in the story. There is also the usual plethora of items to collect, and the usual backtracking that is one of the hallmarks of the Lego games - but with over 160 characters to unlock, as well as the usual red bricks, gold bricks and studs this will keep most players going for some time. The cutscenes are also back with their inimitable take on the host franchise - if they fail to make you even grin you must have had a sense-of-humour bypass. Purists should take note, though - this game is based on the films, rather than the books, and so, while the imagery will be instantly recognisable to most, if you weren't a fan of the films' often strange take on some scenes, and the wholesale axing of others, you'll have the same issues with the game. All in all this is a worthy addition to the Lego stable of games and should have plenty to engage players of all levels.
