Most people are familiar with bobbleheads, those funny, collectible toys with oversized heads that many holidaymakers used to put on the dashboards of their cars to let them nod along to the rattling rhythms of the road. A new trend has emerged in the last couple of years in the form of vinyl figures. You may have noticed here on Zavvi that we’re very huge fans of Funko’s Pop! Vinyl range. Name any famous film or game character, whether we’re talking about Star Wars’ Rey, World of Warcraft’s Deathwing or Tobias from Arrested Development, he or she is likely to have undergone the Pop! Vinyl treatment at some point in their fictional lives. However, let us introduce you to Funko Pop!’s lesser known little brother, the MUNNY! MUNNYs are just as cute, just as collectible and, beware, allow you to be creative yourself!
MUNNY figures have been around for a few years, but have never gained the same popularity as Funko’s vinyl figures. Don’t ask us why, because these smooth little figures by Kidrobot offer ample possibilities. They’re made of soft, smooth white vinyl that you can paint, scribble, pierce, clay, sculpt, ink and dress up! So rather than getting a premade design, YOU’re the one in charge of how you’re vinyl figure is going to look like! Don’t worry if you were the kid at school who couldn’t colour in between the lines, a lot of them come with stickers and accessories to customise them.
So how does it work? You can take your MUNNY toy apart in order to properly paint and decorate your figure. You can then choose to draw on it or dress it up, or, if you’re feeling very arty, use a hair dryer to soften the vinyl and cut out a new design. Just be careful you don’t let the vinyl get too hot!
The idea of the MUNNY was initiated by graffiti and stencil artists who wished to legally display their work to a bigger audience. Although they are known as true do-it-yourself pieces, less crafty admirers can opt for DUNNYs, limited edition MUNNYs that have been designed by commissioned artists. No customising necessary! They have become true collector’s items.
