The Search For The Silver Crystal

Created by Naoko Takeuchi (a writer and illustrator), Sailor Moon is a Japanese manga series that was published in Nakayoshi, a monthly magazine. In total, there are 60 chapters, which are collected across 18 volumes.

The plot focuses on Usagi Tsukino, who is a middle-school student living in Tokyo. After meeting a black cat called Luna, she is given a magically altered brooch with the ability to transform her into a formidable hero known as Sailor Moon. Together, the pair decide to find the moon princess and the legendary Silver Crystal, but they must first assemble the Sailor Guardians: Ami Muzono (Sailor Mercury), Rei Hino (Sailor Mars), Makoto Kino (Sailor Jupiter), and Minako Aino (Sailor Venus). They are also joined by Mamoru Chiba (Tuxedo Mask), a high-school student who fills the role of assistant.

Throughout their journey, the Sailor Guardians encounter several worthy adversaries, the first of which is a group referred to as the Dark Kingdom. Usagi soon discovers that these enemies waged war against them in a previous life, when they belonged to the Moon Kingdom. During this era, the Silver Millennium, Usagi was the daughter of Queen Serenity and fiercely in love with Prince Endymion, which was Mamoru’s previous form. Luna was her advisor, a role that she continues to uphold in the modern day.

In 1992, an anime based on the manga debuted on TV Asahi. Produced by Toei Animation, the show closely follows its source material and has gained a world-wide audience of fans, the dialogue having been translated into multiple languages.
