A Film Filled With Soul
Joining Walt Disney Pictures’ long list of animated classics produced by Pixar Animation Studios, Soul was released in 2020. Directed by Peter Docter and co-directed by Kemp Powers, the film includes a star cast of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House, Alice Braga, Richard Ayoade, Phylicia Rashad, Donnell Rawlings, Questlove, and Angela Bassett.
The story centres around an ordinary middle school music teacher by the name of Joe Gardner, who has a passion for jazz music. One day, he auditions for a position in the band of Jazz mogul Dorothea Williams. Impressing her with his skilful piano playing, he is invited to perform later that same night.
However, he falls down a manhole while on his way back, transporting him into the ‘Great Beyond’. Joe doesn’t accept his fate, attempting to escape and unwittingly ending up in the ‘Great Before’ - a place where unborn souls have their badges filled with traits before passing to Earth.
While there, he is mistaken for an instructor and assigned to a soul by the name of 22. Having been in the Great Before for eons, 22 has yet to find her ‘spark’. Not wanting to move on to Earth, she offers Joe her badge so that he can return home and live out his dream.
This sets them off on a journey of self-discovery, encountering characters such as Moonwind and learning what is truly important in life.
