Good

Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi is almost a must for hardcore fans of Dragon Ball, thanks to a wide roster of fighters. The cel-shaded graphics are simply fantastic and game modes ranging from single to match tournaments online. Unfortunately the games uses QTE and the ability to unleash the most powerful techniques with the touch of a button. Once again the developer wanted to focus on the amount of content rather than on the quality of the fighting mechanics. This is one of the reasons why the Budokai series has been an excellent example of fan-service.

Cinematic experience, repetitive gameplay

3

Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi can be described as the ultimate cinematic experience, showcasing impressive visuals and adrenaline pumping action just like in the series but the result dampens on the gameplay and general player input. From previous games in the series (Budokai Tenkaichi and Raging Blast), this entry streamlines the gameplay so that it is more accessible for all and everyone can pull off the most explosive of moves. The problem is that it all comes down to one button press. The game is soley built around a game of 50-50 chance. Pressing the correct button allows you to further your combos whilst the wrong button breaks the attack. Gone is the freedom to fly around the large playing field and use attacks how you like. Gone is the freedom to defend or escape how you like. All attacks in the game are done in one of the button and how you defend comes down to how lucky you are. Any super attacks that come your way you now have to take head on instead of freely moving/dodging/blocking like in previous games. All characters also use the same combo set up. This game does boast a new create a hero mode but it is so limited in lack of creation and suffers from slow to tedious progression. I can understand the reason for this change, to allow all fans of all ages the ability to experience DBZ in game form and pull off the best of moves as compared to previous games but it also dampens the reply value and the overall fun and potential skill that was available for those who wish to learn. All in the all, the game looks and sounds great. Energy attacks look gorgeous with the accompanying sound. Character models look like their original counterpart (although Super Saiyan hair is green instead of yellow for some reason) and the action that plays out is destructive and the most explosive yet in a DBZ game. However, the other result is that gameplay is so numbingly simplistic and based on luck that it's repetitive, all characters play out the same with the only differences in supers, has a lack in character count compared to previous entries (seriously, no Cooler??) and the main selling point in the hero mode is dull and very strict. I recommend to those who want a cinematic DBZ experience. To feel like you are truly beating people up with super human strength. But for those who want a deep fighting game or the freedom to fight, stick with previous games in the series.

All Dragon Ball fans will enjoy Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi immensely. It's full to the brim with features and has: lots of characters, game modes and all the universe of Dragon Ball in this final version of Tenkaichi. If you are a fan of Goku you cannot miss this title.

Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi

Game by spectacular graphics, surely appreciated by all lovers of the series. The wide range of customizations for the hero and how the addition of mini-game fun and intuitive controls makes this title enjoyable and not at all boring for those who have already tried the previous issues.

Impressive but disappointing

This Dragonball Z game is very good. The fighting techniques have been refined and the excellently improved graphics makes this game one of the best in the series. The problem for me is mainly two things: The lack of characters from previous games annoy me although many would say this is somewhat off set by the chance to create your own custom character for the first time in the series. The other problem I have had in my short playtime so far is non consistent difficulty e.g. some fights are really easy whereas others seem so hard that I can't even hit my opponent. Hopefully this will change as I get further into the game. But moaning aside, as a Dragonball fan who has bought all the great dbz fighting games I have to say I'd be looking to my old ps2 games to find a dbz game that was better than this.

Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi

A great game for fans of the Dragon Ball series that spans from Raditz' arrival on earth to the end of GT only missing a few of the key fights in the series. However there are some major drawbacks such as the use of quick-time events in combos over 5 hits and some of the 'giant bosses' having very cheap attacks. The use of the Kai series animation for important cut scenes was a very nice touch due to the high quality of the animation and voice acting. Overall I would highly recommend this game to fans of fighting games and the Dragon ball series as a whole.

Good story presentation

4

Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi is really good, good graphic and you can play your own music during the game. The story mode is very well presented, but fighting is a let down. If they can mix it with Raging Blast 2 fighting in this game, this will be a 5 star perfect Dragonball game!
